Four score and 60 years later - The Lincoln Presidential Library
The most popular U.S. president will shortly receive, albeit somewhat belated, a major new tribute to his presidency and life in the planned Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield Illinois. Economics Research Associates recently completed a feasibility study of the project examining the potential attendance and revenues of the facility, and projecting capacity requirements as input to the design process.
The project is being overseen by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and is currently under design by HOK Architects out of St. Louis, and BRC Imagination Arts in Los Angeles.
The $115 million project will contain nearly 200,000 square feet of space divided into three primary elements. The Museum, in which state of the art entertainment technology will tell the story of Lincoln, The Presidential Library which will house historical documents associated with Lincoln and other state historic archives, and The Gateway Center, a tourism information area. Several key documents such as the original Gettysburg Address handwritten by Lincoln, and the Emancipation Proclamation will be on display in the museum, as well as numerous items from the Historic Preservation Agency's extensive Lincoln collection.
Projected opening for the project is 2003.
